Small J's First Lunar Birthday

Friday, 27 June 2014

Small J had his first lunar birthday a few days ago.

By Chinese tradition, babies will do a 抓周 on their lunar birthday. A number of items, each symbolising something, are placed in front of the baby and he is suppose to pick one of the them. This will signify what the baby's future life or career is going to be.

I got this list from one of my mummy friend:

書: 會讀書,適合做學者、專家
Book: Studious, May become a scholar, professor etc.

筆墨 : 會成為作家、畫家
Pen and Ink: Writer, Artist, Publishing

印章: 有權勢,會做大官
Seal: Has Authority, Politician, Judge etc.

算盤/計算機: 會當商人、會計師,適合從商
Calculator: Merchant, Trader, Broker, Financial Officer

錢幣: 將來會很富有
Coin: Will be extremely wealthy

雞腿: 有福氣,表示一生將不愁吃穿
Chicken Leg: Prosperous, A life of satisfaction

尺: 表示將來可成為設計師、建築師
Ruler: Architect, Product Designer, Land Development Surveryor

蔥: 代表聰明
Spring Onion: Very bright (May amount to any careers due to brightness and braininess)

蒜: 代表善於計算
Garlic: Good in accounting for and calculating (May amount to any careers or personality that requires this trait)

芹菜: 代表勤勞
Celery: Hardworking and Steadfast (May amount to a personality that values hard work)

稻草: 適合農事工作
Wheat Grass: Agricultural, Horticulture, Natural careers

刀劍: 能當軍官、警察
Sword: Soldier, Policemen, careers in the airforce, navy, infantry

聽筒: 適合醫護工作
Stethoscope: Health Services, Doctors, Vets, Nurses

We planned to let Small J do the 抓周 and eat a bowl of Mee Sua with Egg and Chicken Drumstick on his lunar birthday. However, Big J fall sick on that day and I was busy sending him to see a doctor and attending to him, that I forgot all about Small J's lunar birthday. When I remembered about it, Small J was already sleeping. What a lousy Mummy I am.

I was having my 'Me time' and at about 10+ PM, Small J crawled out of his room and looked at us with a blurry face. He seemed to be telling me that 'Mummy, today is my lunar birthday. Are you going to celebrate it for me?' Lol.

So we quickly gathered the items and let him pick.

Ruler, Pen, Garlic (I don't have the real garlic, so I use a toy garlic), Stethoscope, Book, Coin, Calculator

Excited with so many toys in front of him

And he choose the Coin!

Second try, he went for my camera lens cover! A photographer maybe?
Haha...but this is not in the list of items.

He picked the pen

The third time, he sat there pondering for a long time.
He looked at all the items, don't know which to choose.

And he finally decided to choose the calculator...

... thinking that it is a phone. Hello, hello!

A glimpse into his future!

One-derfully 1st Birthday Bash

Wednesday, 25 June 2014

I got to know this group of Mummies from the Singapore Motherhood Forum during my pregnancy with Small J. We have one thing in common - our EDD is July 2013. We provide support for each other during our pregnancy days - sharing tips on how to overcome morning sickness, announcing when we feel our little ones moving, and giving each other lots of encouragement and support during labor. After birth, we share our woes of confinement and tips on how to handle our babies especially when they are cranky, fussy or sick. Of course, we also organise many shopping sprees and gatherings to shop, eat and play!

Coming July, our babies are turning One! It is their Big One and how could we miss out on throwing a huge party for them. So after months of planning, liaising with sponsors, buying the presents and preparing everything, our One-derfully 1st Birthday Bash is a go!

The theme of the party is Cowboys and Cowgirls. Everyone enjoyed themselves, daddies included. All of us went home with goodie bags filled with goodies from our sponsors and a birthday present for the little ones. I will leave the photos to do the talking.

Cake and decor from My Sweet Cocoa. We really love the setup, totally fits in with our theme!

Our little Cowboys and Cowgirls dressed up in tees from Favor.

Buffet spread from Elsie's Kitchen. Yummy food to fill up our tummies!

Babies enjoying themselves in the ball pit and bouncy castle from Alaka Jump.
Thanks to these, Mummies and Daddies can have their hands free.

We can never get enough of toys. More toys from Rent That Toy!

Not forgetting the Daddies, we had a 'Fastest Diaper Changing Daddy' contest. This is a test to see if they have been helping their wives. The sight was really funny. Top 3 Daddies each won a pack of Goo.n diapers, from Diapers.com.sg, for their little ones.

We also had a Cutest baby boy and baby girl contest proudly sponsored by Paley & Love.

My ABCs: O is for... Overtime

Monday, 23 June 2014

I don't have a habit of working overtime or bringing work home. To me, after work hours are to be spent with my family and they need me.

Everyday after I have finished my work, I returned home to my second job - Mom to my kids and Wife to my hubby. I usually knock off from this job at about 11pm but sometimes I am required to work overtime.

This night is one of the nights that requires me to work overtime. I do not like doing overtime because this usually means that the kids are sick. Get well soon my dear boy!

Rise & Shine Carnival 2014

Friday, 20 June 2014

Rise and Shine!

That's what we did on a lovely Saturday morning. We woke up real early to attend the Rise and Shine Breakfast Carnival 2014. We were really excited for this because this is our first time attending a breakfast picnic.

Arrived at The Lawn @ Marina Bay

Trial class from Ready Steady Go Kids

We were surprised that there are already many people who had reached earlier than us. The lawn was almost fully packed with families with their picnic mat.

Early birds who had already nicely set down their picnic mats

We picked our spot and make ourselves comfortable.

Pardon the baby who was affected by the loud sound

The Nutella Workout happening on the stage

Big J bugged us to bring him to the bouncy castle. He had been bugging us the moment he saw it earlier.

Big J was so eager to jump into the fun. Can you spot him?

This year, the most exciting part of the carnival is breaking the Singapore Book of Records of the largest number of people making breakfast sandwich together. We are proud to be part of this historical moment.

Small J had a banana

Up till this moment, the weather was still very good and we had so much fun. After finishing our breakfast, we were about to start exploring the activities at the booth when the sky suddenly turned grey and the wind came blowing. Alas! It's going to rain! Everyone, including us, started packing and scrambling to the nearby shelters. It's a pity that we didn't get to enjoy the activities. Big J was still saying he wanted to go to the Doc McStuffins's booth to have a checkup for his toy car.

We hope to be back again next year.

Drypers Drypantz - Keeping Me Happy and Comfortable

Thursday, 19 June 2014

Hi there, I am Small J. I am here doing a guest post on my Mommy's blog. You see, Mommy always tries her best to give me the best. She makes sure that I am fed, changed and feeling all happy and comfortable. I know that whenever I am happy, she is happy too.

Mommy goes to work. I only get to see her for that half hour in the morning and the two hours when she reaches home in the evening. Time with her is so limited. I want these moments to be filled with happy memories as much as possible.

This is me crawling out of my room and giving Mommy my megawatt smile. She never fails to carry me and give me a big morning hug.

I am waiting at the door for Mommy to come back from work. A smile does wonders, I got my hugs again!

I love being carried and as you can see, the diaper is always being squashed against my cute little bum bum. I am glad that I don't feel any sense of discomfort. All thanks to the newly improved Drypers Drypantz! With Activ-Core™, it can absorb my urine quickly and prevents flow-back thus promoting long-lasting dryness. I don't have to worry about having a wet diaper being squashed against my skin which means I am always ready for someone to carry me!

Having to wear a diaper for 24 hours everyday is no joke, especially when the weather is so hot. Mommy likes to dress me in a comfy singlet and a comfy diaper to keep me cool. The Drypers Drypantz has a 100% breathable cloth-like cover that helps to keep my skin feeling cool and fresh. It also contains four natural plant extracts (Vit. E, Chamomile, Olive Extract, Aloe Vera), which helps to promote skin health, keeping me dry and comfortable.

Psst... do you know that I am very mobile now? I can crawl, stand, climb and even started to cruise. Nothing can stop me from moving. With Comfort Fit™, the soft waistband on the Drypers Drypantz provides me with a snug fit, allowing me to move around freely without having to worry that the diaper might shift out of place. I love going to the playground!

I hate diaper changes. How could you ask an active baby to stay still for 5 minutes just for a diaper change? I could use those 5 minutes to play and explore! I am glad that Mommy has made the change to let me wear pants instead of open diapers. Drypers Drypantz makes diaper changing so much easier and faster which means more time for play, cuddles and kisses!

Roosevelt's Diner & Bar

Thursday, 12 June 2014

Last month, we were invited to the media event of Kidsme Singapore which was held at Roosevelt's Diner & Bar.

Conveniently located just beside the Outram Park MRT Station (Exit H), Roosevelt's Diner & Bar is perfect for families with children. From breakfast to dinners, milkshakes to wine and kids menu, there is definitely something for everyone in the family.

Roosevelt's is a family friendly diner. The interior is spacious and has long tables. This is great because when dining as a family, we can never get enough of table space.  The photos on the wall are also great talking points with children. High chairs are also available if you need to strap your wiggling baby to the chair.

Here are some of the food that we tried the other day. You will be glad to know that their Kids Menu dishes are all made from real and non-processed food. Say yeah to healthier food!

Buttermilk Waffles with Mixed Berries
Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the Buttermilk Waffles with Mixed Berries is one of our favourite. The scoop of ice-cream goes especially well with the warm waffles. The mixed berries sauce is also not too sweet nor too sour, perfect for my taste.

Big J couldn't stop having more of the waffles

Spaghetti Bolognese
Just look at Big J's expression when he is eating this Spaghetti Bolognese, I need not say how tasty this dish is. The sauce is made from scratch and not those canned sauce, so you can just let your kids eat without worries.

This Fish & Chips are made from fresh dory fish coated in a house-made batter. No salt was added so that it is healthy for kids.

Next up is dessert! This Apple Forest Berries Crumble is another of my favourite. It is made of fresh crisp apple slices, berries and brittle granola crumble, topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Lastly is the Flourless Chocolate Cake. This is hubby's favourite because he loves chocolate. If you love chocolate too, you should not miss this.
