December 2014 - Reflection and Forward

Wednesday, 31 December 2014

December 2014...

... the last month of the year
... time for reflection on the past year
... to look forward to a new year

I can't believe 2014 is almost over. It seems like we have just ushered in 2014 and now we are welcoming 2015.

The boys have grown so much over the year. Small J has lost his baby fats and has grown from a baby who can barely crawl to a toddler who is running all over the place. The thing that has not changed is his hair. It's been more than a year and yet it is still so sparse.

Jan 2014 vs Dec 2014

Big J has lost his baby fats too. He has grown taller but not fatter. I do hope he will gain more fat. I have no idea where all the food he eats has gone to.

Jan 2014 vs Dec 2014

Because time passes so quickly, I always cherish the moments that we are together. Simple play like chasing, hugging, rolling or just lazing around are always fun and full of laughters. On this day, we propped up the playmat, throw a blanket over and it becomes their little house. The boys keep jumping and rolling in their house. They got a bit too rough and pushed over the playmat. No more house and so they started building a tunnel.

We also went to Gallop Stable at Punggol for some pony riding. It costs $10 for a 5 minutes ride. Price is quite steep, if you ask me. But for the experience, I say it's totally worth it!  It was Big J's first time riding a pony and I must say that he did very well! He was not scared and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. If you want to go, do prepare mosquito patch and insect repellent. Almost all of us got bitten by the mosquitoes.

As we look forward to 2015, my wish is good health for the family. There are too many instances of us getting sick in 2014. I also hope to be more organised, both in our house and myself.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters of this little blog of mine. Thanks for reading, thanks for sharing and thanks for commenting. If you are new here, here are some of the most popular and my favourite posts for this year. Do take some time to read them ok?

It's Party Time at Plaza Singapura

Monday, 29 December 2014

Last month, we were invited to a Kids' Party held at Plaza Singapura Family Lounge.

Both Js got their own personalised balloon sculptures. Small J loves looking at how the balloon sculptures were made while Big J was very happy with his car balloon.

Party time was about to start so it's time to put on our party hats.

Look at these adorable sushi. These were made using clay and this was one of the craft activities for the kids. Unfortunately, Big J wasn't really interested and he only meddled with the clay while Small J ate the clay, gasp! However, the older kids who were at the party are really good and were able to make very nice sushi!

Next up, the children were invited to design their own tote bag using the design templates and the materials provided. Small J did not need to use any materials for his bag. He simply scribbled the whole bag!

While the kids are enjoying the party, parents can relax on the massage chair or sofa watching programmes on the Starhub channels.

These are the other services that are available at the Family Lounge. Shoppers can enjoy these services with a minimum spending of S$50.

In celebration of Plaza Singapura's 40th anniversary, they are embarking on a series of activities for children and their families to participate in. This Kids' Party that both Js attended is one of such activities.

For each month from March 2015 onwards, one lucky child will be chosen to host a party. Food, games and activities will be provided by Plaza Singapura. All the child needs to do is gather 20 friends for the two-hour party! So stay tuned to Plaza Singapura's website or facebook for details to be announced.

Plaza Singapura has also launched weekly crafts workshop at its Family Lounge. These workshops are held every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm, 2.15pm, 3.30pm and 4.45pm. Shoppers can register their children for these craft workshops with a minimum spending of S$50 at any Plaza Singapura's outlets.

Disclaimer: We were invited to the Kids' Party by Plaza Singapura. All opinions are 100% my own.

Happy Birthday Dear!

Saturday, 27 December 2014

Hello Ah Dear! Today is your birthday!

I just want to say,

Thank you for being there for me
... During my most painful moments - the birth of both Js.
... During the most difficult period in my career
... During the most happy moments in our lives

Thank you for always helping out in the household.

Thank you for being a great Daddy to both Js, even though they might be so naughty at times.

Thank you for being the discipline master at home.

Thank you for still loving me even though I have aged and gained weight.

Next year might be a very challenging year for us, but I am sure we will pull through with you around and us sticking together as a family.

I Love You!

xoxo

Happy Birthday Dear

My Cooking Journey #2: Watercress Soup, Stir Fry Asparagus with Bacon, Eggy Salmon

Thursday, 25 December 2014

My cooking journey is all about trying out recipes that I come across on Facebook or the Internet. Some of the dishes that I tried are a success and these recipes are a keeper for me. I am not a very good cook, I always cook by gut feel and don't follow the recipes to a T. Hence, some of the dishes are a a failure. Note to self, need to practice more often.

This week, there is a new dish which I am trying out and sadly to say, I failed it. As usual, we had a soup and two dishes.

Watercress Soup
Watercress (1 packet from NTUC. I didn't see how many grams it is)
Pork Ribs
1 Carrot
10 Red Dates
1 Honey Dates
Chinese Almonds (I didn't add this because we ran out of this)

1. Blanch the pork ribs. Wash and set aside.
2. Put all ingredients in pot and boil for 15 minutes. Lower fire and simmer for about 4 hours.

Blanching the pork first helps to remove the scum and any fishy smell from the pork. You will also end up having a clearer soup.

I did not add any salt to the soup because Small J will be sharing the soup. The soup is already very flavourful from the long hours of simmering and the use of honey dates.

Stir Fry Asparagus with Bacon
One packet of Asparagus
2 Strips of Streaky Bacon
4 Baby Corns

1. Prewash the bacon. Cut into small pieces.
2. Heat oil in pan, add in Bacon and fry till brown.
3. Add in Asparagus and Baby Corn and stir fry till cook.

Very easy right? And I love the colours of this dish. I prewashed the bacon because I wanted to remove the salt and seasonings from the bacon. I didn't add in any salt because the bacon is already salty enough and kids are sharing.

Eggy Salmon
Salmon
3 Eggs, beaten

Sauce:
2 Tbsp Mirin
2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
2 Tbsp Water

1. Panfry Salmon skin down. When skin turns crispy, turn the fish over.
2. Pour sauce down the sides of the pan, avoiding the skin of the fish.
3. Pour in beaten eggs.
4. When eggs start to form, turn of heat.

I love looking for inspirations of things to cook at Singapore Home Cooks and this is one of the dish that I learnt from there. But my result is different from the original post. My fish and egg are overcooked and the sauce have all evaporated. However, the taste is still quite acceptable for us. I will try this again in the future and hope to succeed this.

Merry Christmas 2014

A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year from all of us at The Js Arena!

A Staycation @ RWS - Day 1: Port of Lost Wonder, Sentosa Playcation, Crane Dance

Tuesday, 23 December 2014

After settling down in our room, we are off to Port of Lost Wonder (POLW). We took the Sentosa Express to Beach Station. POLW is within walking distant from the train station. However, we decided to take the Sentosa Beach Tram instead, because it is a new experience for Small J.

Mummy, we are going to see this big bear right?
Yes Darling, after POLW ok?

Walking to the tram station

Looking all stunned on the tram

POLW is just one stop away. I didn't managed to take more pictures of POLW because we can't wait to start playing. Plus, our camera and phone are not waterproof, so it is very difficult to keep carrying them around and putting them back again after use.

The Pirate Ship

After we are done at POLW, we went to the Playcation event which is located at Palawan Beach, just beside POLW. While we were walking there, we came across this mini-playground, which are mini version of some of the famous playgrounds in Singapore. Small J enjoys the slide and see-saw the most!

We continued our way to Sentosa Playcation 2014 event.

The super big bear we met earlier at the train station

Toyland, where all the toys come in extra large size

Big unicorn, Small baby

This is the play area which requires admission fees of $6 per 20 mins.
In the Playtent, there are slides and bouncing castle, ball pit, a bull challenge and others.

We went back to our hotel to freshen up and went for dinner at RWS. After dinner we went to watch the Crane Dance. This is a free admission show and takes place at 9pm every night at the Waterfront. This show is about a pair of mechanical cranes and how their love for each other transforms them into real birds. The show comes with fantastic lightings and water effect and ends with fireworks. A pretty breathtaking show and definitely worth your time. Do be there earlier to chop seats as the crowd can be quite big especially on weekends. It's free!

We went to watch another show 'Lake of Dreams' which starts at 9.30pm. To be frank, there's nothing much about this show and you could jolly well skip it. Small J is really tired and we went back to our hotel for the night.

That's the end of our Day 1. Stay tuned for Day 2 as we our fun continues! You can read about the rest of our staycation at the following links:

Safe with Poolzies + Giveaway

Monday, 15 December 2014

If you have been following me on Instagram, you would have seen the above photo. After posting the photo, I have friends asking what Small J is wearing on his feet and what is it about. It is Poolzies!

Poolzies is actually a pair of pool shoes. As the name suggests, this is worn at the pool to protect our little ones' delicate feet.

Anti-slip

If you bring your child to the pool or waterplay parks, what is your biggest worry? For us, it is the fear that he will slip and fall. Both Js love going to the pool and waterpark and they always get super excited and start running around. It is very hard to tell them to stop because they are so engaged in their play. Poor Daddy and me have to run after them and be prepared to catch them anytime they fall. We are blessed that no such incidents has happened yet (fingers crossed).

Poolzies's Toughtek soles is durable, non-slip and heat resistant. I can let him roam around freely without having to worry that he will slip.

Heat-resistant

Another headache we have is the fear that the ground is too hot. We know that baby's skin is very delicate. Can you imagine how uncomfortable they feel when walking on scorching hot ground? Sometimes, there could also be tiny stones or chipped tiles around. These are very dangerous as stepping on them could cause injury to their tiny feet.

As you can see, Small J is walking happily around the park in his Poolzies #likeaboss, while I am busy 'ouch-ing' away due to the hot ground and tiny little stones. The fabric of Poolzies also have a UPF 50+ protection from the sun.

Stylish and Comfortable

Doesn't wearing a pool shoes look stylish? We have got comments from passers-by that he looks very cute in those shoes.

The lightweight lycra fabric makes the shoes ultra light and breathable. From the way he walks, I am sure that he feels very comfortable in it.

With the life jacket and Poolzies, he is ready to conquer the waves. If you look closely, the girl behind him is wearing a Poolzies too!

Poolzies retails for $35 and is available on their website. A pretty reasonable price in exchange for the safety and comfort of your little ones, I say.

A note to parents, these pool shoes are quite new in Singapore. Not all pools and waterparks allow the pool shoes to be worn.

A PROMOTION!
